Question

A) What landform process has occurred in this picture? What geographic features to you see? Why do the rocks look they way they do? Describe the tectonic processes that shaped the rock layers exposed in this road cut in western Maryland, in the Appalachian Mountains. In which geologic era do you think these rocks were formed?

B) Are we here, in the San Antonio, Texas region, at risk from any weathering and/or mass wasting events? If so, where and what preventative measures can be taken. If you think not, what regions are you familiar with that would be at risk, and why?

C) Choose a river in our area. Research its course by using Google Earth, Google Maps, or other aerial or satellite photos. Identify in and along this river at least two processes or landforms. Use an image and/or map to clarify your answer.

Explanation / Answer

A) The landform process that occured in this picture is the formation of a ridge when two tectonic plates compress and due to which they fold and this landform has occured. The above picture is of the sideling hill. Sideling hill is a hill formed by millions of years of mineral deposits, compression and eroding. About 530 to 545 million years ago, the first stage of the creation of sideling hill was happening, layers of sedimentary rocks were being deposited. While the sedimentary rocks were being deposited, The North American plate and the European Plates were starting to compress. When they landplates compress, they fold. The reason why they are in ahill shape when it is bending outward and looks like the layers of sediment just stops is because the rest of it has eroded over time.

Sideling hill has many colours in it, which are red , brown, green, grey and tan. In the rocks there are many fossils, but some plant fossils. The rocks on the bottom are soft, esily eroded older limestone.while on the top, there is hard younger sandstone.
