Question

Most radioisotopic systems are associated with a closure temperature that is the temperature below which daughter product does not escape from the mineral. Suppose an eclogite crystallized at temperature of 750 degree C and this rock was dated by the Ar-Ar technique using muscovite, which has a closure temperature for Ar diffusion of about 400 degree C. It is most likely that the age obtained will be YOUNGER or OLDER than the actual crystallization age (circle best answer (ie Younger or Older) and IGNORE the possibility of the phenomenon known as excess Argon).

Explanation / Answer

answer- In radioisotopes parent nucleus is unstable and decay into daughter nuclei. radioisotopes are radioactive isotopes. they have excessive nuclear energy. these radioisotopes are naturally occruing. closure temperature is that temperature at which a mineral is sufficiently cooled so that Now there is no diffusion of parent into daughter isotopes. then parent nuclie will no converted into daughter nuclei.

when ecologite whose crystallizing temoeratue is 750C is dated by Ar- Ar dating techniques using muscovite. muscovite have closure temperature of 400 C for Ar diffusion.so the age of the rock obtained will be Younger than actual crystallization age. because below the closure temperature the parents rocks unable to converted into daughter nuclei. it wil stop the diffusion of parents isotopes into daughter isotpes. So the rock dated will be younger than acutal crystallization age.
