Question
Using material under Water Properties and Ocean Systems, compare and contrast the range of noises made by different species. What is the argument and data for how human noise affects these animals? How do you think these organisms would react to large noises, such as oil exploration, versus more ambient background noise, such as distant ships or boats? Think and discuss specific species, generalities are good, but details and examples go a long way in explaining a point. How do these species use sound? What functions may be disrupted with anthropogenic noises?
Explanation / Answer
Using material under Water Properties and Ocean Systems, compare and contrast the range of noises made by different species. What is the argument and data for how human noise affects these animals?
Marine animals use their acoustic energy sensors to adapt to marine environment. Many species has their own specific stimulations. Sea animals have different ways of sensing the sound properties. They sense sound pressure gradient, an oscillation of particles, medium vibration etc.
The noises occurring in sea are natural and anthropogenic types. Naturally occriing noises are caused by wind, waves, tides, tectonic and volcanic activity. Anthropogenic noises are sound of ships, boats, oil/gas drilling, military operations, submarine telemetry, marine mining and civil engineering activities.
Marine animals like dolphins and whales have hearing membranes suitable to recognize and react to the pulses. They identify with these hearing aids the sound impulses are natural or artificial and react to them accordingly.
The human noise in the form of boats, ships, drilling and marin projects adversely affecting the marine animals. Beuase the marine animals sensors are adapted to natural noises. Human made noises frequencies and their energies are much more than natural noises. So the marine life is under great threat due to this artificial human created noises.
How do you think these organisms would react to large noises, such as oil exploration, versus more ambient background noise, such as distant ships or boats?
Transoceanic shipping fleet of around 87,000 vessels sailing creating hazardous noise levels. An average vessel noise level range between 70-90 dB as much as 45 dB over the natural ocean Nosie. So we imagine the ever increasing vessel fleets effect on the marine animals.
The seismic air guns creating remarkable seismic disturbances causing damage to marine life. These explosions impact levele varies between 250 to 255 dB. Similar impacts from oil/gas wells observed in the ocean waters. These noise levels are creating catastrophic damages marine life. We are unable to see these effects but there are casuing harm to marine life. These disturbences may also responsible for fishery depletion in the ocean waters. These sounds may effecting the marine life habitats and may be responsible for their migration from there. It may also causing effect on health of marine species.
Think and discuss specific species, generalities are good, but details and examples go a long way in explaining a point. How do these species use sound? What functions may be disrupted with anthropogenic noises?
Anthropogenic noise frequency bandwidth of marine animals is from 1 Hz to 200 Hz. Anthropogenic noise occurs along ocean habitats, coastal inlets, bays, across the continental shelf to up to deep sea floors. All humans activities producing noises in the oceans and they are increasing day by day.
These noises damaging tissue of marine life, sound sensor membranes and their health. The effects these noises on marine life includes feeding, breeding, habitational bonding and their communication behavior. The effect are on their physiological responses which are not environmental friendly effecting their healthful life. The dense human life on coastal areas and their activity noise levels triggering damages on marine life. These changes may be inducing in marine life to adapt new trends of marine life may result catastrophic effect
