Question

The analemma can he found on slide 7 (and other slides) of ES11_Sun Angle Variations and the analemma graph is posted in the file on the Moodle course site. On the analemma, assume that the nearest horizontal graph line to the date is correct. (No need to fine tune your answer any more than this.) ________On January 25. at what latitude is the sun directly overhead at solar noon? Solar altitude is the sun angle at solar noon. What is the solar altitude at 51 degree N latitude (approximate latitude of London. England) on March 10? Show the calculations. _______ Because the orbital speed of the planet changes along an elliptical path, solar noon may arrive a few minutes earlier or later than might otherwise be expected. On October 30. at what time of the day will the sun reach its highest position in the sky? Write your answer on the line provided.

Explanation / Answer

24. The Analemma graph shows the days of the year and the latitude at which the rays of the sun are vertical. On seeing the graph we see the declination angle is 19 degree S on January 25. Therefore at 19 degree S latitude the sun rays will be directly overhead at noon.

25. To calculate the solar altitude

A=90-L+/- D

L=latitude= 51 degree N

D=declination at 10 march=-4. degree

A=90-51-4

=35

Therefore solar angle on 10 march in london will be 35 degree

26. On seeing the graph we can see that the sun will be 16 minutes faster on october 30. So the sun will be highest in the sky at around 12:16pm.
