Question
1.The point P (0.5, 2) lies on the curve y = 1/x.
a. If Q is the point (x, 1/x) use your calculator to find the slope of the secant line PQ (correct to six decimal places) for the following values of x:
0.70, 0.65, 0.60, 0.575... There are plenty more i can find on my own once I know what I am doing. This is one of my practice questions and Long story short I have no clue how to use my calculator to find these answers. So I am looking for a step by step to what I press to find these answers, you only have to show me a detailed step by step for the calulcator on the first one to recieve full points! I dont just need answers, I need to learn how to set this up in my calculator!
Explanation / Answer
y = 1/x
slope = [(1/x) -2 ]/ [ 1/(1/x) - 0.5]
= [1-2x] /[(x)(x-0.5)]
= [1-2x]/[x^2 - 0.5 x]
x = 0.7
put x = 0.7 in slope
==> slope = -20/7
x =0.65
slope = -40/13
x = 0.6
slope = -10/3
x = 0.575
slope = -80/23
