Question

1. Compare and contrast specific coevolution, diffuse coevolution, and escape-and-radiate coevolution providing different examples than your textbook to illustrate these concepts and speculating on the evolutionary pressures that support the evolution of each. Relate the Red Queen Hypothesis to each, and explain the relationship. 2. Using the 1957-1958 Asian Eluepidemic, discuss the situation that allowed the infection and disease severity to reach epidemic statue, and the environmental pressures that caused the epidemic to subside. Be sure to use the evolutionary understandings from this chapter to guide your writings.

Explanation / Answer

In coevolution two or more species reciprocally affect each other. In diffuse coevolution whoke group of species interact with each other and leads to changes that can not really be identified as A group of plant species may a fed on by a insect species. This is diffuse coevolution.

In specific one species interacts closely with another so changes in one induces changes in other. Gene for gene coevolution is of this type.

In escape and radiate coevolution innovation enables adaptive radiation that is speciation due to availability of ecological opportunity.

as per Red Queen hypothesis organisms must constantly adopt evolve and proliferate not only to gain reproductive advantage but also simply to survive.

RQ hypothesis seems to rely on assumption that gene variation for resistance exists in the host population and that each genotype can only infect a small subset of possible new genotype.

Each parasite population is chasing host genotype in the same location.

If we had multiple host population we would expect to find more genetic diversity and more sexual reproduction in those areas where virulent parasites ate more and where less asexual reproduction will be seen.

Asian flu epidemic was due to influenza virus speed. It was pandemic. H2N2 strain if influenza virus was the causative against of the flu.

Quick discovery if vaccine reduced the epidemic. The strains were changed due to the change in the environment. This virus spreads better in very cold temp so if the temperature is high the effect of the virus reduces.

This is due to evolution every time the virus was adjusting itself with the environment. But extreme environmental changes also could be adjusted by the virus because of genetic adjustment.
