Question
The following figure shows current tiger populations and potential tiger habitat recovery zones (places where tiger populations may be reestablished) based on where they have lived in the past. Many of the existing populations are very small. Based on what you have learned in chapter 7, 1) Explain what specifio physical actions could be taken to help them survive, and 2) Name and thoroughly describe what the outcome might be if not established. Teral Arc Landscape Subcontinont Russian Far East Indochina Asia Tiger's present range gers historic range C00 1000 2500Explanation / Answer
1. Physical actions to be taken to ensure the survival of tigers and protection of the tiger habitat:
(i) Survey the tiger habitats currently throughout the world. Form task-force to physically protect these habitats from poachers, hunters etc. There must be adequate water and prey in the tiger habitats to enable them to thrive, thus protection of these habitats is utmost important. There should be a forest ranger and officer to inspect the habitat for any illegal acts. Also, a medical team should be available to provide the immediate care to injured or infected tigers.
(ii) Fund raising should be carried out by tiger conservation groups throughout the world. The concept of Eco-development should be propagated so that economic groups also participate in tiger conservation. The local people can be involved as apart of their employment for tiger protection.
(iii) Captive breeding should be adopted by conservational biologists to ensure that tigers in captive, such as zoos, as medically fit and their future cubs are healthy and their population becomes sustainable.
(iv) Use of ancient medicine requiring tiger products should be totally banned by the government. Use of tiger products as display and show-piece should be stopped.
As individual everyone should propagate these messages and create awareness for tiger habitat protection and conservation.
2. The outcome of not establishing tiger habitats could lead to the following:
(i) Loss of protected forest land will lead to climate change and disruption in geochemical cycles.
(ii)Lack of clean water, since tiger reserves surround one of the largest watersheds in the world. Many livelihoods depend on this water reserve for survival, and also the watersheds regulates the water flow to the river beds.
(iii) Threat to the lives of other endagered species which live within the range of tiger habitats. Thus investing in tiger reserve help protect a multitude of other species of animals and birds.
(iv) Loss of cultural biodiversity associated with tigers in many parts of Asia.
