Question
A new mutation arises in a single, fertile individual in a population. Discuss how and why each of the following might occur (note – each scenario has several potential environmental pressures or genetic characteristics that could occur. Describe TWO for each of these scenarios):
a) The mutation is lost from the population
b) The mutation slowly increases in the population
c) The mutation rapidly increases in the population.
d) The mutation spreads slowly and then maintains a low but stable level within the population.
Explanation / Answer
The mutation is lost from the population because of environmental fluctuation and it also depends on the different pressure conditions. Based on the environment changes, mutant allele will become dominant.
The mutation rapidly increases in the population because of environmental stress which is the reason of activation of mutation genes. Changes in the environmental pressure effect the genetic variation.
