Question
Question 3 For this question, you must cite at least 1 peer-reviewed source. Potatoes are a very important vegetable crop in the US and many farmers and consumers rely on them. Because of the increase in temperature caused by climate change, many crops, including potatoes, are suffering because they can't tolerate the high temperatures. 1. What biological trait(s) are needed to solve this problem and in what organism(s) would you find a gene for this trait? 2. Describe the entire process of how to make your new GMO. 3. What are the potential health issues or environmental impacts of your new GMO?Explanation / Answer
1. Potatoes can be damaged by higher temperature and for solving this problem abiotic stress resistance is induced by inserting gene like gene for Heat Shock Protein. Heat Shock Proteins are the protwins which can tolerate a higher degree of temperature range than normal and some plant living in higher temprature climate synthesize them.
2. For production of GMO firstly gene of interest is idenumtified and then inserted into a vector like plasmid or artificial vectors. Then the vector is transferred into host for obtaining Transgenic or Genetically Modified Organism. Then these are tested for a series of trials and measures to be released into market.
3. GMO are baneficial but may also cause serios outcomes -
Health - Encountering of new protein activate immune system and cause allergy like Glutan allergy.
Toxicology - Recombinant protein may baneficial to one species but may be toxic to other.
Ecological - Gene escape - gene may transferred to non Transgenic plants by breeding. e.g. Superweed generation.
Invasive species - invasive species can be formed and may cause a threat to biodiversity.
