Question
9. Many health food stores carry enzyme preparations that are intended to be ingested orally (by mouth) to supplement existing enzymes in various organs like the liver, heart, and muscle. Use your knowledge of the digestion process to explain why these preparations are unlikely to be effective as advertised 10. A young child grows rapidly, with high levels of cell division and high energy requirements. If you were plånning the child's diet, which food groups would you emphasize, and why? Which food groups would you deemphasize, and why?Explanation / Answer
9. Enzymes are chemically proteins. In our stomach and intestine, protein digesting enzymes are present. When taken orally, these digestive enzymes will break down swallowed enzyme preparations into their component amino acids. For the activity of the enzymes, the three dimensional structure is necessary but during digestion, enzyme preparations lose this 3D structure as they are broken down. hence, they will no longer be effective as enzymes.
10. Cell division requires a number of functional enzymes and also proteins to build up new cells. Cell membrane contains proteins. So, the food of the child should be high in protein, so that body gets necessary amino acids for synthesising enzymes and proteins. For healthy growth of cells, vitamins and minerals are necessary which will be obtained from fruits and vegetables, a rich source of energy also. These foods will be emphasized.
Sugars and fats should be de-emphasized unless thay contain some essential nutrient. High level of sugar and fat in the diet may lead to diabetes, heart problem and obesity
