QUESTION 8 (10 MARKS) a) A biofuel company in Australia is interested on converting sugarcane bagasse into (2.5 MARKS) b) What are the biomass feedstocks for the production of biodiesel? Briefly describe (2.5 MARKs) ethanol. Give your technical opinion regarding the overall costs and green house gas emissions compared to sugar-based bioconversion. the process for biodiesel production? c) What are the biomass feedstocks for the production of natural gas? Briefly describe the process for biogas production (2.5 MARKS) d) Give an example of a sustainable platform to produce biofuels on a large-scale? Justify your answer. (2.5 MARKS)

Explanation / Answer

The cost for this technology should be decided on the basis of methods used for bagasse treatment and reactor choice. This is not only depending on the financial feasibility ground but also on the best method we use for the conversion of lignocellulose to bioethanol. Profitability of an investment project is the main concern to be focused while choosing the techniques and the tools. The bagasse is the waste product of sugar based conversion which is used for biofuel production, so it will decrease the cost significantly. There would be a great decrease in the greenhouse gases as compared to the other fuels. In case of sugar based bioconversion the emission of CO2 is much higher as compared to the lingo-cellulosic. Biomass feedstock for biodiesel production: sugar or starch-based crops and oilseeds are the main feedstock for biodiesel production. It includes palm oil, soybean, some grasses, jatropha etc.The production of Biodiesel involves the pretreatment of the feedstock followed by catalyzed reaction of transesterification to the product purification and refinement. Feedstock for natural gas production: The natural gas production requires all kind of organic wastes as biomass feedstocks like cowdung, human waste, vegetables waste degrading green leaves etc.Process of biogas production: An underground air tight cylindrical tanks is the biogas reactor plant where all the waste is dumped and allowed to degrade by the anaerobic fermentation by bacteria to produce methane which is called natural gas or biogas. Sustainable platform to produce biofuel on large scale: Biofuel are the future of world for the sole source of energy as the non-renewable sources are depleting continuously. The lignocellulosic based methods for production of bioethanol will be the most cost-effective and less pollution creator when it comes for the best method for biofuel production. But the sole lignocellulose cannot fulfill the whole world’s requirement. So the algae for the production of biofuels, organic wastes for biogas, crops and oilseeds etc. for biodiesel when work hand in hand along with the hybrid technologies including two at a time. The cost effectiveness and environmental protection should be the main focus with every techniques for sustainable development of biofuel industry.
