Question
according to the book the answer is that it is evolving. however I thought a population only evolves only if the equilibrium does not equal 1. when I work this problem out I get 1.
I round to get .52 for 'p' and use 1-.52 to get .48 for 'q'
formulas:
p^2+2pq+q^2=1
p+q=1
1. WHAT IF? > A locus that affects susceptibility to a degener- ative brain disease has two alleles, Vand v. In a population, 16 people have genotype VV, 92 have genotype Vv, and 12 have genotype vv. Is this population evolving? Explain. For suggested answers, see Appendix A.Explanation / Answer
The total population is = 16+92+12 = 120
The frequency of VV or p2 = 16/120 = 0.133
The frequency of Vv or 2pq = 92/120 = 0.766
The frequency of vv is = 12/120 = 0.1
The frequency of p = p2 + ½ 2pq = 0.133 + ½* 0.766
P = 0.133 + 0.383 = 0.516
The frequency of q = q2 + ½ 2pq = 0.1 + ½* 0.766 = 0.483
So, the p+q = 0.516 + 0.483 = 0.999 (so, the population is evolving)
