MEMBRANE STRUCTURE & MEMBRANE TRANSPORT Discuss the different ways in which the mobility of proteins is restricted in plasma membranes. Indicate which of these mechanisms is highly responsible for the asymmetric distribution of membrane proteins observed in the epithelial cells that line the small intestine. (0.4 points) Answer 4. 5. Which of the following organisms would you expect to have the greatest percentage of unsaturated fatty acid chains in their cellular membranes. Provide an explanation for your selection. Explanation / Answer

4. Mobility of proteins is restricted into plasma membrane by many ways. Proteins are tethered to cell cortex inside cell and extracellular matrix outside cell or to proteins on to surface or diffusion barriers can restrict proteins. Epithelial cells separate an organism’s internal milieu from its external environment. To perform this barrier function, these cells possess an asymmetric-design, with an apical membrane facing an outside lumen and a basolateral membrane facing neighboring cells and the basal lamina. These two distinct membrane domains are separated by intercellular junctional complexes, called tight junctions.

5. Cold blooded organisms have higher percentage of unsaturated fatty acid chains in order to lower the critical temperature for the transition from a liquid crystal (fluid) to a gel phase (rigid) below the temperature.
