Plasma membrane allows only certain molecules to pass through and other molecules that do not fit into desirable criteria (size,shape,charge, etc) are not allowed to pass through the plasma membrane. This helps to maintain integrity of cell and provides protection.

This is similar to an airport security checkup, where those individuals who are found to break laws/rules of security (carrying arms, weapons etc ) are not allowed to enter beyond the security check point, whereas individuals found to be fine are allowed to pass through.
