Many of the pesticides and plastics used today are suspected of acting as an endocrine disruptor. Do some reliable scientific research (and cite your source) to find out what an endocrine disruptor is and how this might affect the human population. Do you feel that the public knows about the issue of endocrine disruptors? What changes might you make in your life to minimize your exposure to endocrine disruptors? And think about how much you use plastic everyday. Could our culture of convenience live without the majority of the plastic we use? Make sure to include a citation of the scientific research used to help you develop this learning log assignment.
Explanation / Answer
Endocrine system is involved in every stage of the life i.e development ,puberty, adulthood and aging .Endocrine disruptors is exogenous chemical that interfere with functions of endocrine system leading to abnormal functions of the body.
Hormones of endocrine system regulate major processes in the body ,endocrine disruptor chemicals mimics the structure of the hormone ,they interfere with the receptor and block the endogenous hormone from binding , leading to abnormal process in the body .
EDCs includes arsenic,BPA,organotins, dioxin, pesticides, pthalates,d polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) used in electrical equipment etc.,which interact with the biological pathways of the body .
EDCs are presant in industrial chemicals ,they can leach in to soil and ground water and they move through the food chain from aquatic organisms to animals, animals to humans, some EDC are transferred from mother to foetus ,they are presant in consumer products such as plastics, household chemicals, fabrics, cosmetics, lotions, anti bacterial soaps, flame retrdants, preservatives, pesticides, dyes.
EDC interfere with sperm quality.fertility, abnormality in sex organs, endometriosis, early puberty, nervous system functions, immune system functions, cancers, metabolic and heart disorders etc.,.
Plastics are very useful in many ways ,they are made up of many chemicals .we need to think about their consequences ,plastic is the substance that earth cannot digest ,in united states ,we throw about eighty eight thousand tons of plastic, most of it goes to the landfills and portion gets in to the water course and eventually ends up in the oceans ,it makes around 90% of trash floating on the water ,plastic products absorbed in to the body and they disrupt the endocrine system functions .Awareness about hazardous effects of endocrine disruptors had to be know to each person in order to protect their health and environment .
In order to minimize the exposure to endocrine disruptors ,All introduced chemicals should be screened for ED activity .The better way to avoid exposure is to avoid products containing EDCs. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is supposed to be identifying endocrine disruptors using its Endocrine Disruption Screening Program.By refusing the usage of disposable plastic you can improve the health of the ocean, environment and the human health .
