If you ask people when they think that brain development ends most will respond by age three. Though there is a great deal of brain development going on during this time it is by no means done at age three. Recent research has suggested that there is an important surge in brain development that coincides with puberty. The teenage years are full of mood swings, episodes of rage, narcissism, insolence, defiance of authority, etc. These behaviors may in part be due to the brain development taking place at this time. Several areas of the brain are undergoing changes at this time. These areas include the limbic system and the prefrontal cortex. Do some research and discuss how the changes in these areas of the brain may correlate too many of the stereotypical "teenage behaviors" mentioned above. How should parents and teachers deal with these biologically based behavior problems? Why is it of critical importance to educate teens on the problems associated with sex, smoking, alcohol consumption, and drug use at this time?

Explanation / Answer

The answer to this question arising would be less of scientific and more of socially and mentally understanding occurs. It is true that at a certain age (according to research at 3 years) the development of the brain stops but not completely as there are several regions of the brain still under the process of being developed. Besides these physically occurring changes, there is also a balanced state which has to be maintained in growing kids as they counter several mood swings and temper fluctuating situations now and then. Thus it becomes very important to guide them on a correct path at this critical stage of life. Therefore it is mandatory at a certain age around 15 to 16 years of age the kids have to be given awareness about the upcoming habitual threats to them that could be via drug consumption, smoking as well as providing them with sex education.
