Question
Lab Analysis: Investigating the Cell Many sports drinks are actually hypotonic solutions. How do these drinks hydrate their users? What would happen if a severely dehydrated person consumed a hypertonic solution such as sea water 7. 8. A dialysis bag that is impermeable to sucrose is filled with a sucrose solution. The bag is then placed in a beaker of distilled water. Predicr whether the weight of the bag will increase or decrease with time, and explain why Use the information provided in Section 4 of this lab about glycoproteins and glycolipids to explain why a person who has had a kidney transplant must take drugs that suppress the im- mune system. Be specific in your answer 9.Explanation / Answer
7. When an athlete is dehydrated, the cells in the body get dehydrated and the solute concentration increases (hypertonic). The sports drinks are hypotonic. When a hypotonic sports drink is cosumed by the athlete, water in the hypotonic solution moves into the cells and the cells get rehydrated.
If a hypertonic solution such as sea water is consumed, water will move out of the cells which will lead to excessive dehydration.
8. The sucrose solution is hypertonic with respect to the distilled water in the beaker. As a result distilled water moves into the dialysis bag (water will move from higher concentration to lower concentration). As a result, the weight of the dialysis bag will increase.
