Question

For a non-human organism with somatic cells that have 20 chromosomes, indicate the number of

chromatids in the G2 phase.

chromosomes during prophase of mitosis.

synapsed homologous pairs in metaphase I.

chromatids in anaphase of mitosis.

telomeres in the G0 phase.

a. chromatids in the G2 phase. – 40 or 20

chromosomes during prophase of mitosis. - 20

c. synapsed homologous pairs in metaphase I. – 20 or 2

d. chromatids in anaphase of mitosis. – 40 or 5

e. telomeres in the G0 phase – 40 or 5 not sure which of the values are right, i think im confusing it with meiosis.

Explanation / Answer

-The somatic cells have 20 chromosomes.

(a) chromatids in G2 phase :-

- the somatic cell has 20 chromosomes.

- The chromosome gets duplicated during S-phase of cell cycle.

- so according to the question the S-phase is over.

- so replication have already taken place. Each chromosome will be having two chromatids.

- So number of chromatid in the G2 phase will be 40.

(b) For mitosis the chromosome number remains unchanged.

- so number of chromosomes during prophase of mitosis will be 20.

(c) Now this question is based on meiosis because synapsis occurs in prophase-1 of meiosis.

- A homologous pair contains two chromosome.

- so synapsed homologous pairs in metaphase-I will be 10.

(d)

In anaphase of mitosis the splitting of chromatid occurs .

They move to opposite pole.

- since chromatids are in the same compartment the chromatid number will be 40 .

(e) The cell is in G0, so it is not deviding.

- So its consist of 20 chromosomes. Having single chromatid.

- each chromatid has two telomere at their ends.

- so number of telomere will be 20 *2=40.

- so there will be 40 number of telomeres.

Hopefully it helps if problems arises plz comment thanks.
