Question

this was a portion of a question i had for an assignment

eII) Answer the jollowing Questions! lla) Our recording was made at a temperature of 24C! What do you expect would happen to the action potential conduction velocity if this experiment would be repeated at a temperature of (1) 10° C and (ll) 40° C? Explain! (3 pts) llb) Our recording was made from the median giant neurons with an axon diameter ameters of "only" 40 um you expect those to have a higher or lower conduction velocity than the median giant neuron? Explain! (3 pts)

Explanation / Answer

1) at a lower temperature the action potential conductance velocity would decrease and at a higher temperature the velocity will increase. this is due to the diffusion rate of ions is affected by the temperature. Diffusion would increase with increase in temperature which is why the velocity of the action potential would decrease.

2) An axon with a larger diameter would offer less resistance for ions to flow in and out and thus the velocity of AP would be high. Therefore, axon with diameter 40micrometre will have low velocity of action potential than the one with 70micrometre diameter
