Q. Based on your data and observations, what are some of the differences between normal cells and cancer cells?

Answer:

Q.When studying cell division in tissue samples, scientists often calculate a mitotic index, which is the ration of dividing cells to the total number of cell in the sample. Which type of tissue would have a higher mitotic index, normal tissue or cancerous tissue? Explain

Answer: The cancerous cell has high mitotic index because they are produced due to some mutagenesis in their DNA. Due to the mutation they differentiate or divide in an uncontrolled manner whereas in case of normal cell division in a controlled manner and have many checkpoints and at last normal cell die but cancer cell grows continuously. So we can say that due to uncontrolled dividing nature of cancer cell they have the higher mitotic index. For example, a cancerous lung tissue has 5 times higher mitotic index than normal lung tissue.

Q. Different types of normal tissues in the human body have different mitotic indices. From the following list which normal tissues would you expect to have the highest mitotic index: muscle, skin, kidney or lung? Explain your answer.

Answer: Out of these above-given tissues skin has highest mitotic index because the skin of our body is continuously replaced throughout of the life. For example, if we got cut on the hand or arm the skin of that place replaced within the 5-7 days because due to high mitotic index old cut or ruptured skin is replaced d by the new one.

Cancer cells Normal cells The growth of cancerous cell is uncontrolled. The normal cell stop growing when their number is enough. They are immortal in nature. Normal cell die after completing its lifespan. They don’t have communications with other cells. Normal cell communicate with surrounding cells. Cancer cell wasn’t able to make small groups and they float away from their actual position and spread all over the body with blood stream. Normal cell secrets some specific substances which stick them together in a group. Cancer cell of an organ varies in size and shape Normal cells of a particular organ have same size or shape. Cancer cell is always remain immature because before achieving maturity they divided. Normal cell grow mature and then old and die.
