Gram positive bacteris stain dark violet in the gram staining procedure. Because of the presence of peptidoglycan layer, the violet color is retained, which appears dark colored in the figured. Therefore, the figure A is gram positive. Figure B is gram negative because gram negative cells take up the counter stain which is light in color (saffranin).
