Around the middle of last century, circumcision was presented as a modem way to improve hygiene and prevent certain conditions, and the procedure was routinely performed on all male babies. In the 1980s and 1990s, circumcisions became a matter of debate as some insurance companies would not pay for them, deeming them an unnecessary procedure Some parents felt the procedure was unnatural. There was even a case of a young man who sued his parents for having him circumcised in infancy, and depriving him of his natural birthright. What are your feelings about this procedure? acer

Explanation / Answer

An infant can not decide what is good or bad for himself. So, the parents/relatives must take care of him and subject him to treatments that are humane and beyond controversies.
Although there are several advantages of circumcision such as reduced risk of urinary tract infections, sexually transmitted infections, and penile cancer, it may not be a good idea to a subject an infant to circumcision based on religious beliefs. The reasons are,
i. It is a traumatic and painful experience.
ii. Reduced sensitivity of sexual organs
iii. Excessive bleeding and the risk of post-operative infections
iv. There are less intrusive ways that can achieve the same purpose of circumcision (Hygiene and condoms).
v. It removes natural protection to the most sensitive part of the penis.
