Community Plumbing Challenge
3.
1) Team did really well in terms of thinking about sustainability at school - 125 in Nashik.
They kept every minor mathematical calculation in mind whiile building extra tanks and urinals. Design of taps (Auto-off feature) was truly remarkable as students of the age 5-15 usually forget about closing the taps after the use.
2) Even water meters and daily usage monitoring comes really critical in analysing the sustainability of the soluton design.
3) PVC pipes selection was also a great and cost effective idea.
4) We could see the taps but nowhere liquid soaps ? Something could have been done to provide this as well at the washbasin near urinals
4.
1) We know how childern are ! They forget things easily which are enforced to them and not by their own choice.
Hand wash tap iin the urinals should have been kept near by the door at the exit with a related slogan in local language at the top or with some attractive Cartoon character drawn or simply a wall clock. So that every time student gets over using toilet, he/she just don't run for the next classes and instead use the flush to wash his / her hands
2) Instead of teaching all the students bricklaying, pipe threading, and making water filters, team could have formed a Health Club Committee with some enthusiastic students (approx. 5 to 10 in numbers), ran and managed by students but guided by school staff and management could have been a more sustainable option. As deserving students of the clubs could have got the appropriate recognisions as well to be a vigilant and responsible brat.
3) Teams could have also designed a liquid or solid soap despenser at the urinal as not all of the germs gets eliminated by a normal water wash. The most cost-effective option in India would have been "Wood Ash".
