Question 2
Motivation in the Assembly Shop was high. However, the Shop Manager notices that while the daily production was above average for the Shop, it drops down to a low during the first hour after the lunch break. The problem was further diagnosed to be that the operators tended to continue socializing until well after the lunch break. The shop Manager changed the lunch break and staggered it over a two hour period, so that the operators could not go to lunch together. To his surprise, the motivation began to fall and productivity dropped dramatically. What do you think was the problem? How do you advise the Shop Manager to fix this problem?

The Sales Director has unexpectedly secured a small, but highly profitable order which requires some low-level development and a minor change to the current production process. Should the company accept the small order? If so, how should the company satisfy the small order?
Explanation / Answer
Some of the most important Characteristics of effective leaders includes personality of the leader, may not be confused with that of an actor , and or sports person, and or that of a model but something that has the power to attract people and creates an impression to have faith in him/her deliverances. Apart from having a personality aura, the leader is supposed to have very good communication skills both verbal as well as written. Effective leadership is directly proportional to the effective communication. This very much includes the qualities of a good listener with lot of comprehensive capabilities apart from being a very good speaker in the languages with which the audienaces are comfortable. Effective leaders carries conviction and strong missions and clear vision about the thing to do and the thing not to do as well. Very good discipline is must for effectiveness. This does not mean rigidity but on the contary flexible enough to adjust to the changing dynamics of the environment and also keep pace with the social, technological and other developments happening world over. The other important key words are Honesty, Empathy, Direction, Consistency which makes a person being called an effective leader. I do not find any reason why engineers needs any extra efforts than a normal person in becoming an effective leader. Nowadays, effective leadership is required in each and every field. Engineers may lead the manufacturing and sophisticated technology driven industries in much better way as Doctors are turning into very effective leaders in the health care sector.
Answer2 As per my understanding of the case , the workers are not able to fulfill their social needs. I may agree and accept that" The problem was further diagnosed to be that the operators tended to continue socializing until well after the lunch break." Now the solution adopted by the shop manager is not actually the solution rather it has aggrevated the problem. In a way added fuel to the fire and thus the productivity dropped dramatically and raised the problem of demotivation. The shop manager should recognize the social needs of the operators and try to have a brain storming season with the operators before deciding about the lunch break timings as well as about the productivity norms during various time segments during the day so that the average for the day should be achieved. Apart from the lunch break, opportunities may be created for the operators to socialize both on the job as well as off the job and should be directed/ encouraged to share individual's best practices and also to share their problems for finding solutions (may be innovative) so as to keep them motivated for higher levels of needs as per the Maslow's heirarchical needs.
Answer 3.
Such situations do occur in most of the manufacturing firms. Unexpected wind falls in business happens and do results in both the directions. At times, favorable conditions work and so huge unexpected profits and at other times situation slips from the hands and suffers unexpected losses or in a way took the risk and suffered. The situation demands a careful analysis of the risks and rewards attached with the acceptance and or rejection of the small order. If it is possible to convince the major customer to permit some delay, go for it seriously. In case outsourcing is feasible and economical, go for the same. In case the manpower is ready to work overtime, go for it.
In other words, even at the additional costs (out of profits) the small order may be accepted and resources should be streached to complete both the orders.
