1. The main areas of the focus for the Operations Managers has to be the focus areas of Operations Management which is commonly defined as the management of that part of an organization that is responsible for producing goods and or services. Operations Managers are responsible for the operating system that converts inputs, using physical resources, to create outputs, with the objective to satisfy customers wants.Principal functions of an operating system may be classified as Manufacture, Transport, Supply and Service. The operations managers makes the efficient and effective use of resources at the disposal of the organization to meet the customer satisfaction.Right from the stage of product design, process design, production planning and control to the final stage of delivery to the customers and or consumers and their feedbacks and or after sales service falls within the areas of operations managers.
2. Supply Chain Management, in short SCM, is the management of the flow of goods and servicesand in way part of the overall operations management. It focuses on the movement and storage of the flow of various raw materials, work-in-process, say semi-finished, and finished goods right from the point of origin to the final point of consumption. There may be sub-systems similiar to parts of a chain that are connected with one another. Separate modules for different raw materials with different types of transportations from different orogins may be to a single and or multiple raw material/s handling and processing units. It is not only the raw materials but includes information, and finances that moves in way similiar that of a chain from supplier's suppliers to customers's customers. Typically considered as movements from suppliers to manufacturers to wholesellers to retailers to customers to actual consumers.
3. Role of Suppliers in a way may be termed as that of one end of the Chain who are in possesion of something that needs to be send to the other end of the Chain. At the other end of the chain are the consumers who wants, needs the materials with the suppliers but need not (may or may not) be in the shapes, forms as available with the suppliers. Therefore, suppliers sends the goods, rather raw materials to all types of processors, and manufacturers who transforms raw materials into semi-processed and passed on the others for further processing and becomes suppliers to them. Manufacturers becomes suppliers to the wholesellers and whplesellers are suppliers to retailers and retailer are suppliers to the customers and consumers. So there may be entities which acts both as the buyers as well as the suppliers.
Selection of suppliers have multi-disciplinary approach. Often there is trade off between the price and quality of the materials to be supplied by the suppliers. The lacation of the suppliers is also important because of costs of transportation. Further modes of transportation available between the location of the supplier and the location of the buyer also determines the time and costs involved related to selection of the supplier. The brand image and reputation of the supplier is equally considered for its selection. The time horizon, short-term vrs long term supplies, one time requirement and or repetitive periodic requirements from the suppliers also have an impact on the selection of suppliers. The total number and capacities of suppliers are also considered while evaluating the options, alternatives available.
