Over the years, large business organizations have steadily reduced the number of layers in the organization structure. What purposes has this profound change in structure served? What resistance to change might the CEO encounter, and why? What can a CEO do to gain support for change in his or her organization?

There are many purposes has served by steadily reduced the number of layers in the organization structure. These are as follows:

1. Hierarchy of authority : One of the main characteristic of bureaucracy is the lower level employee is controlled and instructed by higher level managers.Most of the top authorities are at positions and decreases with each level.

2.Unity of Command : It states that each subordinates receives assigned duties from one superior and that subordinate is accountable for that only.

3. Task specialization: In an organization, labor is assigned with certain duties with respect to their knowledge and experience. There are many departments in an organization such as customer support, IT , finance. Peoples works in these departments is specialized of their work.

4. Responsibilities and Job Description : In an organization, each employee follows a precise job description and knows what is job expectation from them. Responsibility and authority of each manager is clearly defined for which they have work accordingly.

5. Line and Staff functions : Line functions of an organization involves the primary functions and staff functions support the line functions. For example a bank have line function is to lend money and increase banking business while the staff function involves human resources and purchasing.

There are many resistance to changes that might the CEO encounter, these are following:

* The most common fear of change is more chances of unfavorable outcomes such as less income or personal inconvenience.

* Changes are unwelcome because person don't want to change habits like to discuss meeting is done but not favors video conferencing.

* Peoples resist changes as they feel they have lack of skills to perform in change environment.

* Workers can resist change as the weakness in proposed change can overlooked by the management.

CEO do the following to gain support for the change;

Allow for discussion and negotiation : Support for change can be increased by discussing and negotiating aspects of changes with different teams and managers. From this employees are familiar and known before it implements.

Allow for Participation : Employees or other companies members asks for any right modification or process to implement proposed change. This will create confidence among the peoples who accept those changes and work in that.

Points out compelling reasons for change, including the financial benefits : Define with the organization for the proposed changes, why management take decision for change, its necessity among the employees. Explain them how much company financially benefit from that.

Establish a change or Urgency : The presentation of proposed change will often create sense of urgency. Why change is necessary in coming time, this will create more acceptance by majority of employees.
