Question
DO NOT ANSWER IF YOU CANNOT USE YOUR OWN WORD....DO NOT COPY FROM THE WEB OR BOOK.
There has been a lot of excellent comments about big-picture ethics but lets look at a couple simple situations. Your responses should be based on the actions of the employees and NOT the action of the businesses.
As you may have noticed, I respond to some of your questions and discussion posts during normal working hours when I am at my desk at work. Am I acting ethically or not?
I was sitting in an Irish pub is a large metropolitan area one Saturday evening several months ago when a city police officer walked in. The bartender automatically drew him a soft drink and sat it on the bar for him. He drank it, walked around the area and left. Is the police officer acting ethically or not?
It is and has been common for many convenience stores and fast food restaurants to give large discounts on coffee and food to on-duty firefighters or police officers. We are talking half-price to free. Is it ethical for them to accept these discounted or free items?
Explanation / Answer
1. No, it is not ethical to respond to these questions during my normal working hours. I am being paid to work for my organization and i am using my organization's resources. Even i am free and not using resources of organization, it is unethical to work in the offical hours without logging personal time off.
2. No. It is not ethical for them to accept discounted or free items especially while on duty. This sometimes can come under bribery or quid pro quo. This is so because this may have not been mentioned in pub's policy. Even if pub allows the bartender to offer free drinks, it is unethical for the officer to accept the drink unless the prolicy is applied to all co-officers. In that case, it would not become quid pro quo.
3. If the discount or free items are provided to all officers on duty or it is part of the policy of the store, then we can call it ethical. Since many stores offer discounts to one segment of population like woman, children etc. This type of policy make it ethical for officers to accept it as it offered to the profession rather than a person. These type of offers are provided sometimes to honour the profession
