Explanation / Answer

Bariatric surgery can be performed either using gastric banding which is reducing the size of the stomach with an adjustable gastric band (an inflatable silicone device which is placed in the stomach to reduce food consumption and thus reducing appetite of obese people.

Gastric bypass on the other hand is a technique in which the stomach is divided into upper and lower pouch and small intestine is rearranged. This leads to reduction in the volume of the stomach and hence lesser consumption of food.

Multivitamins ar taken after bariatric surgery to make sure that body is functioning to its full potential and avoid any malnutrition or vitamin deficiency.

Chewing using the mouth followed by churning within the stomach (peristaltic movements and segmentation) would enable mechanical digestion of carbohydrates, proteins and dietary fats.

Chemical digestion is through stomach by release of enzymes that work well to break down carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Bile secreted by the liver enable the emulsification of fats and aid the activity of lipases. Enzymes such as proteases/ amylases/nucleases from pancreas enable the breakdown of proteins into amino acids carbohydrates/nucleic acids. Small intestine secretes maltase that further breaks down carbohydrates.

Absorption is mainly through epithelial lining of small intestine by membrane transport mechanisms such as secondary active transport, faciitated diffusion, osmosis or simple diffusion.

Probiotics are the food/nutrient that aid in growth of useful bacteria within gut system.
