1) A worker, age 24, who is injured in an auto accident and is expected to return to work within 4 months.

2) The disabled worker's spouse, age 40, who is caring for a dependent child under age 16; the disabled worker is currently receiving benefits.

3) The disabled worker's daughter, age 16, who is attending high school full-time.

4) A chemistry instructor, age 51, who can no longer teach because of chronic laryngitis but can work as a research scientist for a drug company.

5) A 42-year-old worker who expects to be off work for at least one year due to a crushed foot

Explanation / Answer

1. Not eligible. As the person should be unable to perform any job for atleast one year.

2. Eligible. A spouse receives benefits at the age of 62 or at any age if she's caring for a child under age 16.

3. Eligible. Benefits are paid to unmarried children under age 18.

4. Not eligible. Under old age benefits, the person must be atleast 62yrs old. Also, in order to qualify, a person should be unable to perform any gainful work.
