Question

This is a question that has a few parts that are all relative to the story, and I really need help completing it. Thank You

After watching the 1966 film The Fantastic Voyage, Dr. Dave has invented a shrink ray, and he wants you to test it out! You and your team from BIOL lab are going to enter a submarine and then shrink down to the microscopic level. He has equipped your submarine with three items:

a ray gun that destroys the nuclei of cells
a lamp that emits a powerful beam of light
an anchor that can attach to lipids
a container of antibiotics on the outside of the ship

On a hot Saturday, you and your team enter the submarine, which Dr. Dave has set up by Lily Pond in Balboa Park. As a crowd gathers around, he tells you that your mission is to survive the shrinking process and report back on any discoveries you make. You solemnly wave to the crowd, board the submarine, and take your place in front of the large window at the front of the ship. The last thing you see is Dr. Dave pointing a long cannon at you, and then rainbow colors splash across your vision, your stomach drops, and it feels as if every cell in your body is stretched to its limit! When you come to your senses, miles of concrete stretch before you, and there is a vast expanse of blue green water on your right – Lily Pond. Before you can steady yourself, a giant hand reaches down and pushes you into the water; your adventure has started!

Thinking quickly, you command your team to gain control of the submarine, and the engines spring to life. Your second in command shouts, and you see something that looks like a giant octopus, except that the “tentacles” aren’t permanent; they project outwards and then collapse back into its body. Within seconds it has engulfed your ship, and you can feel the hull creaking as digestive enzymes start to break it down. You have seconds to live! What creature is this, and how do you defeat it? As the captain, you will have to explain your reasoning. Do so using your knowledge of taxonomy and cell characteristics.

If you chose correctly, then the creature died, but you’re still trapped inside it! You try your engines, but they’re not working, and you begin to sink to the bottom of the pond. As you sink, smaller, rod-shaped cells surround you and start decomposing the creature. It becomes dark as they crowd together, and you realize that if you don’t act soon your crew will be decomposed as well. What is this creature, and what do you? Make sure to explain your reasoning using your knowledge of taxonomy and cell characteristics.

The threat is over, and you and your crew now sit at the bottom of the pond, with no working engines. The cold starts to seep through the hull, and you need to make it back to the surface if you want to have a chance of Dr. Dave finding you again. Off in the distance you see herds of green organisms racing through the water towards the surface, their long tales spinning furiously. If only you could attract them towards then you might be able to hitch a ride. What are these creatures, and what do you? Make sure to explain your reasoning using your knowledge of taxonomy and cell characteristics.

You’ve reached the surface, and you active the emergency signal so that Dr. Dave can locate you. As he scoops you up in his hand, you see that his skin is made up of millions of flat cells that look like pink pancakes; however, there is an irregularly shaped cluster of them that are a dark, reddish brown. You recognize that it’s skin cancer! As a last act of heroism, you decide to kill these cells. What do you do, and why? Make sure to explain your reasoning using your knowledge of taxonomy and cell characteristics.

Dr. Dave places the submarine on the grass, points the cannon at you, and you brace yourself for the rainbow transformation back to normal size. Congratulations! You’ve survived your adventure. Check with your SI to see how well you captained your ship.

Explanation / Answer

The organisms that is found in blue green water is the blue green algae or cyanobacteria. This produces neurotoxins, cytotoxins and hepatotoxins. This is a threat to the the humans when the humans are present close to the blue green waters containing this organism. It has tentacles that project outwards and then collapse back into the body. This causes a disease called motor neuron disease which destroys the neurons. Since this organism do not have nucleus it cannot be destroyed by ray gun. The lamp that emits a powerful beam of light helps to destroy this organism.

The rod shaped cells are the bacteria called bacillus. Their major role is to decompose the cells and they are capable of decomposing very large organisms. So in order to destroy these quickly antibiotics can be used which can destroy them in a short period of time.

The organsims that are green and are able to swim in the water are archea. These organisms have one or more flagella which helps them to swim faster. These are the fastest organisms reported till now which can be measured in bodies per second(bps) and ie 400 and 500bps greater than the speed of cheetah. This archea has a lipid structure surrounded on its surface. So to find Dr. Dave using an anchor that can attach to the lipids of archea would help.

To kill the cells that caused the skin cancer ray gun should be used to destroy the nuclei of the cells. Because nuclei is the factor for cell survival, growth and proliferation and so it must be destroyed. It is important to kill these infected cells in order to prevent the spread of these cancerous cells to other parts of the skin.
