Question

My fiancé is an assistant manager at a major grocery store chain in the Northeast, who gave me a great idea for this topic. Control charts could be used to identify the productivity of his cashiers. Which shift are checking out customers the fastest and most efficiently? Which are making the most errors? Common causes are expected variations. In this example, weekend shifts could be busier with larger orders because nights are usually quick pick-ups after the customers get out of work. Special cause variations are unexpected and unusual occurrences. For this example, this could be the night shift which is typically younger, newer employees. Since they are newer and not as experienced, they could make additional errors that an experienced daytime cashier would already have experienced.

Questions:

Is the process in control or out of control? Would the process be in control if Western Electric rules are considered? Explain your reasoning?

Explanation / Answer

Answer: Control charts are tools that are used to determine if a manufacturing or business process is operating properly. If an analysis of these control charts indicate that the process is under control or stable, then there is no need for any changes in the parameters of the process control are needed. An example would be if an accounts department was involved with an improvement project and wanted to reduce the amount of internal purchase orders that were submied incorrectly by customers. Using the application of control charts, in order to measure the data, the account department should use the p-type control chart to measure the number of purchase orders that were not completed correctly. Using this p-type control chart would give the number of incorrect forms that were made out and how to revise these errors.
