bvdve Page 2 3. (4 points) The fruit fly species, Drosophila biarmepes, gained its spots by a mutati a) Describe, in detail, the mutation that occurred in these fruit flies to give them their sp b) Describe, as ion in a single gene. ots. completely as possible, the information you would need to determine how long it would take for a new mutation that has the same effect (causes wings pots) to appear in a ation of fruit nies that didn't have the spots, but are closely related to the D. biarmepes. rrange that information into a formula that would allow you to caleulate how many years it would take for such a mutation to appear in that population (include all units) What specifically would determine the rate at which such a mutant allele would spread through a given population once it arose? d)

Explanation / Answer

Ans-A the spot occur due to the mutation named as dosase compentation. In this mutation the XX show expression and supression which lead to spot formation.

Ans-B mutation are random process so no time is fixed for their occurance but if these are test crossed with the mutated species then there are chances that the next generation will show these mutation. As we know that drosophila has a life cycle of 6-14 days so this much days will be enough to this mutation to occur in next generation. To achieve this mutation there should be minimum 1000 generation so it will take 1000* 10 i.e. 10000 days

Ans-C this can be written as minimum generation required for mutation to occur and multiplied by the generation time of a single drosophila.

Generation required× life period of single individual

Ans-D the close observation of the subsequent generation will reveal about the spread of this mutated gene if once arose. This can also be calculated by using punnet square test.
