The letters after some of the entries refer to the arithmetic of Equation 1-4 Set up a table similar to Table 1-2 in your notebook. The first column gives the approximate interval measured, the second the actual buret readings, the third the difference between consecutive readings, the fourth the weight of the flask plus water, the fifth the difference between consecutive weights, and the sixth the apparent weight as recorded from the balance and corrected for air buoyancy. The seventh column should give the true volume, and the eighth column the true volume minus the apparent volume, or the correction for that interval. The last column is the cumulative correction for an initial reading near zero. Check the calculations for the buret calibration by substituting the corresponding values from your table for the letters in the equation (see Table 1-2 for example values). (1-4) If the arithmetic is correct, the two sides of the equation should agree within 0.01 ml. After completing this check, ask the laboratory instructor to initial your notebook.
Explanation / Answer
The cumuative correction is the sum total of all the corrections. Add the corrections as they appear with the previous correction. In the 8th column , the first correction was 0.00. Hence cumulaive = 0.00
Next correction = 0.03; cumulative = 0.00 + 0.03 = 0.03
Next correction = 0.02 ; cumulative = 0.03 + 0.02 = 0.05
Next correction = -0.03 ; cumulative = 0.05 + (-0.03) = 0.02
Next correction = -0.03 ; cumulative = 0.02 + (-0.03) = - 0.01
