Question
A BIO 205 groups tests the rate of osmosis through dialysis sacs. They prepare 5 beakers, with 200 ml of solution each, and 5 sacs, with 10 ml of solution each, according to the table. Which of the following scenarios will allow them to prepare enough 10% sucrose with no more than 10 ml leftover?
A. 100 ml of 60% sucrose diluted to 10% with RO water
B. 110 ml of 40% sucrose diluted to 10% with RO water
C. 70 ml of 30% sucrose diluted to 10% with RO water D. 55 ml of 40% sucrose diluted to 10% with RO water
E. 70 ml of 60% sucrose diluted to 10% with RO water
Explanation / Answer
Solution:
According to the question we require at least;
5 beakers X 200 mL = 1000 mL &
5 sacs X 10 mL = 50 mL
so the total requiremnt = 1050 mL.
However using C1*V1=C2*V2, we find that A, B, C, D & E can give 600 mL, 440 mL, 210 mL, 220 mL & 420 mL. So none of the option fits the bill. Probably one of the figure is incorrect (may be the volume in beakers).
