Marijuana is one of the most wisely used illicit drugs. Marijuana has an active compound called cannabidols which have 64 isomers and each isomer has different effect on human health and behaviors. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the most active metabolite responsible for the effects of marijuana. In human brain marijuana receptors are located at multiple parts with major receptors at cortex, hippocampus, cerebellum, and nucleus accumbens .

Marijuana impairs cognitive function on a number of level-it affects basic motor coordination, it affect persons ability to problem solving, decision making and controlling emotions.

Data from various research also suggests that chronic and acute usage of marijuana has different affect on cognition. A chronic user has negative affect on cognition, whereas convincing evidence is available which indicates that acute use of marijuana affect cognition in positive manner resulting in increase in cognition.

Data from multiple research studies have proved that long term use of marijuana results in cognitive decline. Prolonged use of marijuana results in memory impairment.
