A village on the Indonesian island of Alor has two ethnically distinct groups Asians and Melanesians. In one village, 40% are Asian. Due to a mutation on the gene encoding hemoglobin, the Melanesian are more frequently resistant to malaria. Indeed, 70% of Melanesian are malaria resistant whereas only 20% of Asian have this resistance.Explanation / Answer
Assume that the total population size = 100
Asians = 40% = 40
Melanesians = 100 - 40 = 60%
Malaria resistance in Asians = 20%
= 8 individuals
Malaria resistance in Melanesians = 70%
= 42 individuals
Total malaria resistant population = 42+8 = 50
50% of the total population is malaria resistant.
Probability to find a Melanesian = 60% = 0.6
Probability to find a malaria resistant person = 50% = 0.5
Probability to find a malaria resistant melanesian = 0.5 X 0.6 = 0.3
= 30%
