Question

9. Answer the following questions about the below pathway. Pluses means that intermediate activates the enzyme, minuses means the intermediate inhibits the enzyme. Metabolites are boxed and enzymes are labeled with letters. Isozymes are indicated with subscripts. Threonine A CL+ 2-ketobutyrate Pyruvate 2-acetolactate 2-aceto-2 hydroxybutyrate 2-ketoisovalerate Isoleucine Valine Leucine a.) If valine is in abundance, will this increase or decrease leucine production? b.) If valine is abundant, will this increase or decrease isoleucine production?

Explanation / Answer

A. If valine is in abundance then the production of leucine will decrease because valine deficit cells convert pyruvate into 2-acetolactate and corresponding enzymes to form valine and leucine.

B. If valine is in abundance then the production of isoleucine will increase because valine abundance will not convert pyruvate into 2-acetolactate so pyruvate will act on 2-ketobutyrate and form isoleucine , and also valine abundance increase the production of 2-ketobutyrate by acting upon Threonine.
