Question

sailor who has, like all of his countrymen, long pinky fingers, hairy ear rims, and a beaked nose (traits all of which are conferred by dominant alleles) is the sole survivor of a shipwreck on a remote uncharted desert island where the all the members of the native population have short pinky fingers, hairless ear rims, and ski-jump noses. Assuming that the native alleles are recessive and that marriage between near relatives is taboo, what is the likelihood that Gilligan's great grand children will also have all three of his distinguishing traits (i.e. long pinky fingers, hairy ear rims, and a beaked nose)?

Explanation / Answer

In this case if Gilligan gets married to near relative with the same features, genetically there is a possibility that the great grand children will carry the traits forward. The probability is nearly 50% as it is the dominant allele which is most likely to be expressed. If he marries someone from the recessive allele side, there is a chance that the great grand children might even show or express the recessive trait.
