Question
When analyzing your mice experiment's data, you realize that the mice you bought from Parker Laboratories are more susceptible to infection with Salmonella than mice obtained from Jefferson Laboratories. You suspect that the microbiome could be playing a role in the Salmonella susceptibility observed in the Parker Laboratories's mice. You are meeting with your advisor and need to propose experiments to test the hypothesis that the microbiome is responsible for the phenotype observed. Briefly, describe two experiments you could propose in the meeting.
Explanation / Answer
hypothesis- microbiome is responsible for the suceptiblity to salmonella infection.
experiment 1- analyze microbiome of both mice for:
a. species diversity in microbiome
b. species richness.
if suceptible mice lacks species diversity or richness then microbiome might be responsible for suceptibility
experiment 2- analyze whether specific strain which is competitvely excluding salmonella from non suceptible mice is lacking from microbiome of suceptible mice.
