Question

Based on theoretical idea of human ability to metamorphosis

In the movie “Altered States, 1980” The researcher experiments with isolation tanks to explore human consciousness. During these isolation tank experiences he has profound hallucinations. To increase the effectiveness of the hallucinations or see how far they could push the research he takes a drug substance from a tribe of Indians. While combining the isolation tank with the psychoactive drug his body starts to undergo changes, structural changes. In parts of the movie you see a glimpse of what appears to be a large primate come out of the tank where the doctor was experimenting. The assumption is that with the isolation tank in combination with the drug it somehow caused a genetic alteration to the extent of him becoming “ape like”

First Part: So from a theoretical model (there is no correct answer) explain what might be occurring in his cellular pathways (hormones, receptors, second messengers, and transcription/translation) that cause the initial hallucinations or as they want you to believe memory regression (believing that memories from past lives or our ancestors are stored within our DNA). So this is likely occurring with chemicals and structure already in place in the brain. You just need to describe a process that would be activating the system and what is being activated. (Think Chapter 15)

Second part, now he adds the drugs to the system and this activates something completely different! It is obviously activating transcription factors that are normally dormant. So describe what might be occurring that allows him to change physically into his primitive state. (Think chapter 16)

Explanation / Answer

Ans-1 the psychoactive substance might have causes mutation in the various genes of the body, which results into the altered phenotype of the body, the whole system was changed due to it's effect. The hormones and enzymes will got an altered form and whole mechanism of the system got changed in a suspicious way or it may be due to change in the neuron signals which change the intensity of the signals and the function simultaneously.

Ans-2 there might be some mutations which make the genes as they were present in primates, this will be due to alteration in the genotype due to change in their nucleotide sequence or due to rearrangement of the genes accordingly.
