Question

A single MHC genes code for different mRNA and consequently proteins. In one specific case, two different transcripts are produced: one 850 ribonucleotides and one with 730 ribonucleotides. Describe the process involved in the production of these two different transcripts that lead to functionally and structurally different proteins originated from the same gene. Explanation / Answer

When a single gene produce several different ranscripts, then we called the process alternative splicing. At the time of alternative splicing, when mRNA get processed, then specific exons of a gene either get included or excluded from mRNA. Thus, different length of mature mRNA are produced that can have several different combinations of exons. These mRNAs thus produced different proteins which originates from same gene.
