In genetic drift , allele frequencies within a population change by chance alone as a result of sampling error from one generation to another . In fact. genetic drift causes large changes in a population over a short period of time. It is important to remember that natural selection also results in a change in the allele frequency in a population but, while genetic drift occurs by random chance , natural selection causes evolution on the basis of fitness.
3. There are two major types of genetic drift -- population bottlenecks and the founder effect.
A population bottleneck is when a population size becomes very small very quickly. This generally occurs due to a sudden catastrophic environmental event like habitat destruction, overhunting of a particular species etc. Population bottlenecks increase inbreeding due to a reduced pool of possible mates.
A founder effect occurs when a new species is started by a few members of the original population. The small population size means that the members may have reduced genetic variation as compared to the original population .
So, we can say that founder effect as well as population bottleneck has contributed to a change in allele frequency in the new populations.
