Question
Immunology
For the following three scenarios: A cancer patient with kidney malignancy,A host receiving a kidney transplant from an unrelated donor, A Tasmanian devil bit by a devil carrying facial tumor cells
1) please rank their immunogenicity against the allo- or iso-grafts, i.e., the likelihood of the host to mount immune rejection against the graft.
2) What is the one major factor contributing to the good or poor immunogenicity in these scenarios and provide your explanation for each scenario?
3) What would you do to mitigate immunologically to improve the survival of these hosts?
Explanation / Answer
Please find the answers below:
Answer 1: The extent of relatedness of the host and the donor can be described as maximum in same individual followed by related individual, un-related individual of same blood group and then finally unrelated unknown individual. Thus, based upon these discriminations, the order of immunogenicity against the allo- or iso-grafts can be found as below:
Answer 2: The major factors contributing to these immunogenicity scenarios are as enlisted below:
Case 1: The MHC complex of the two individuals are highly different and thus induce immunogenicity in the host.
Case 2: The carrier contains facial tumor cells but owing to the fact that cancer is a non-communicable disease, the host will not receive cancerous cells or the disease from the predator.
Case 3: The patient here contains cancerous cells in his own kidneys. Since these cancerous cells are generated in his own body, they will not be recognized as non-self by the body due to the composition of their cell-surface cluster of differentiations or CD.
Answer 3: In order to mitigate these problems, the host must be provided with immunosuppressants in the first case so that the host-immune response might not consider the foreign transplant as non-self and prevent immunological attack on it.
