Question

Problem 9-8A In recent years, Cullumber Company has purchased three machines. Because of frequent employee turnover in the accounting department, a different accountant was in charge of selecting the depreciation method for each machine, and various methods have been used. Information concerning the machines is summarized in the table below Salvage Value Useful Life (in years) 10 Depreciation Method Machine Acquired Jan. 1, 2015 July 1, 2016 Nov. 1, 2016 Cost $128,500 81,500 76,800 $18,500 11,300 6,800 Straight-line Declining-balance Units-of-activity 2 For the declining-balance method, Cullumber Company uses the double-declining rate. For the units-of-activity method, total machine hours are expected to be 35,000. Actual hours of use in the first 3 years were: 2016, 670; 2017, 3,600; and 2018, 4,900 Your answer is incorrect. Explanation / Answer

CALCULATION OF ACCUMULATED DEPRECIATION ON EACH MACHINE AT DECEMBER 31, 2018:

(1) Straight line depreciation amount for machine 1 = 128,500 - 18,500 / 10 = $11,000

Depreciation for 4 years = (11,000 * 4) = $44,000

(2) Double declining rate = 1/ useful life * 200% = 1/ 5 * 200% = 40%

Depreciation for First year = 81,500 * 40% * 6 / 12 = 16,300

Depreciation for Second year = (81,500 - 16,300) * 40% = 26,080

Depreciation for Third year = (65,200 - 26,080) * 40% = 15,648

(3) Depreciation rate for Machine 3 = (76,800 - 6,800) / 35,000 = $2

Every year , actual hours of use is multiplied by this rate to calculate the depreciation amount.

CALCULATION OF DEPRECIATION EXPENSE FOR MACHINE 2 IN 2016 AND 2017:

For First year, depreciation expense = 81,500 * 40% * 9/12 = $24,450

For second year, depreciation expense = (81,500 - 24,450) * 40% = $22,820

DETAILS MACHINE 1 MACHINE 2 MACHINE 3 Accumulated Depreciation as at December 31 11,000 * 4 = $44,000 16,300 + 26,080 + 15,648 = $58,028 1,340 + 7,200 + 9,800 = 18,340
