PLEASE ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS
For this week's discussion, you will explore the scientific, conceptual, and ethical implications of embryonic stem cell research. As a class, you will discuss the pros and cons of this research and be sure to answer the following questions in your discussion.Stem cell research is a controversial debate Discuss the pros and cons of embryonic stem cell research. Be sure to include at least three pros and three cons
1. What are stem cells and where do they come from?
2. Why do scientists want to use stem cell lines?
3. What are the possible benefits for humans?
4. Is there another way we could get the same possible benefits?
5. Why do some people oppose embryonic stem cell research?
Explanation / Answer
1.Stem cells are undifferentiated cells which can get differentiated into different specialised cell types. Stem cells gets produced at the embryonic stage at the inner cell mass of blastocyst. At these stage the embryonic cells are totipotent i.e the cells can get converted into any type of cells.
2. Stem cells have the potential to give rise to any kind of specialised cells. So it can be used for study of any kind of cells in the body. On medical purpose stem cells can be used to regenerate damaged tissue in case of injury or any kind of illness under optimal condition.
3. Benifits of stem cells to humans:
a) For potential drug testing in clinical studies: Stem cells can be converted into any kind of cells such as cancer cells and can be tested for targated drug therapy.
b) For damaged tissue regenaration ( cell based therapy)
4. There is a line of stem cells called induced pluripotent stem cells which are produced from normal cells by inducing stem cell characteristics in it( i.e altering its gene to make it pluripotent). By this method any kind of cells can be converted into stem cells and be used for medical benifits.
5. Some people oppose embryonic stem cell research as to obtain the stem cells an embryo need to be destroyed that means killing a potential life. This is unethical to some people. But the stem cell research can develop the medical science to a great extent and affect mortality rate.
