Question

“currently investigating how rice plants growing in paddy fields perceive daily weather signals and then regulate gene expression” of the aquaporins, such that there will be higher root hydraulic conductivity when the evaporative demand is high. For the current question generate a hypothesis or explanation of how the rice shoots might perceive high evaporative demand (such as low RH) and then transmit that information to the root system. Describe any cells that might perceive drying, any logical hormone, and any vascular tissue involved

Explanation / Answer

The rice shoots perceive high evaporative demands through the process of transpiration and it completely depends on the day and night cycles which include factors like light intensity, temperature along with humidity. There are number of proteins known as aquaporins which are present in the plasma and intracellular membranes which help in movement and transportation of the water and small neutral solutes. The water is moved into the roots after it undergoes the transpiration cycle and move it to the roots through the help of the aquaporins. When there is high evaporative demand, it fulfills it through the pores through the process of transpiration.

The cortical cells are the ones which are able to perceive drying and the vascular tissue that is involved in the whole movement in xylem.
