According to book Final Accounting.Evaluate leadership at Arthur Andersen. What kind of leadership character seems to have been expressed? Are there any unique challenges for leadership in a partnership structure? Are there any unique leadership challenges in public accounting?Explanation / Answer
Leadership in the erstwhile entity Arthur was weak as well as unethical. Although the leadership at the organization was strong their energy was misguided and this led to their collapse after the Enron debacle.
Leadership characters that were expressed were ability to foster team work within the company, and to promote and encourage merit based performance. Under the leadership of Leonard Spacek (who was the company’s CEO for 16 years) the firm was able to tie together its different objectives – the need to serve its clients meaningfully, the need to fulfill their public responsibility and the need to grow and expand.
Yes, there are certainly unique challenges in a partnership structure. In such structures there are several partners at the top and each may have different approach and outlook towards leadership. This may, sometimes, create a conflict.
In public accounting the unique leadership challenge is that leaders have to ensure that ethics is never compromised on while the accounting firm is serving its clients and fulfilling its responsibilities.
