Question

(From Silverman & Eals [1992]. Sex differences in spatial abilities: Evolutionary theory and data. In J. Barkow et al. [Eds.], The adapted mind: Evolutionary psychology and the generation of culture. New York: Oxford University Press.)
Silverman and Eals (1992) were interested in exploring sex differences in spatial ability. A number of studies show that males perform better than females on tasks of spatial orientation (ability to perform mental transformations necessary to maintain accurate orientations during movement). Based on a theory about sexual division of labor in evolutionary history, Silverman and Eals (1992) proposed that females may perform better on tasks of spatial memory (ability to recall the location of objects in space). In one test, 20 women and 21 men were placed in a room in which there were a number of objects. Later, they were asked to recall the objects in the room and where they were. Women correctly recalled an average of 11.55 items (S = 5.23). Men correctly recalled 6.80 items (S = 4.34).

Explanation / Answer

1. Comparison distribution df can be calculated as follows:

Sum total of correctly answered by women = total women x Average correct answer

= 20 x 11.55 = 231

Sum total of correctly answered by men = total men x Average correct answer

= 21 x 6.80 = 142.80

df = 231 - 142.80 = 88.20

2. Comparison distrbution m difference

Average correctly answered by women = 11.55

Average correctly answered by men = 6.80

m difference = 11.55 - 6.80 = 4.75

3. Comparison Distribution S Difference

N1 = 20

N2 =21

S12 = 5.232 = 27.3529

S22 = 4.342 = 18.8356

COmparison S diference is the combined total Standard Deviation which can be canculated by formula :

S2 = [ {(N1 - 1) x S12 } + { (N2 - 1) x S22 } ] / { (N1 - 1) + (N2 - 1) }

= [ { (20 - 1) x 27.3529 } + { (21-1) x 18.8356 } ] / (19 + 20)

= [ 519.7051+ 376.712 ] / (39) = 896.4171 / 39 = 22.9850

S2 = 22.9850

S = (22.9850)0.5 = 4.794
