Question
6 Problem 2. (6 points). The Y chromosome contains two genes for protein 4 of the small ribosomal subunit (RPS4YI and RPS4Y2). These genes belong to the NRY 1 gene class. The gene for RPS4 protein is also present on the X chromosome (RPS4X) but is different from the RPS4YI and RPS4Y2 genes. These genes are haploinsufficient. Since in females, one of the X chromosomes is inactivated in each cell would you predict that the RPS4X gene is: a. Not active on the Xi chromosome. b. Not active on the Xa chromosomes. c. Escape inactivation on the Xi chromosome. d. Is duplicated on the Xa chromosome. e. None of the above f. All of the above.Explanation / Answer
The human RPS4X and RPS4Y genes located on the X and Y chromosomes, appear to encode isoforms of ribosomal protein S4. Haploinsufficiency of these genes may contribute to human phenotype known as turner syndrome. Although RPS4X maps near the X-inactivation center, the gene is expressed on inactive human X chromosomes. This gene ecodes a compenent of 40S subunit of ribosomal complex and is not subject to X-inactivation.
