Question

l. Below is the charging by induction procedure outlined in section 4 of the lab manual. Just after each step of the procedure, determine the sign of the net charge on the electroscope vane and electroscope disk. 1. A Teflon rod is rubbed with a wool cloth so that it becomes negatively charged. An electroscope is nearby that is initially neutral on both its vane and disk. 2. The charged rod is brought near the disk of the electroscope. The charged rod does not touch anything and no sparks Jump. What is the sign of the net charge on the disk just after this step? Post Vane hat is the sign of the net charge on the vane just after this step?

Explanation / Answer

2).- the sign is positive, if the rod is charge negatively and the vane and disk are with a neutral charge this mean that have the same quantity of negative and positive charge. then when the rod is near the disk. the charge positive travels from vane to disk, because opposite charge attract.

The sign of the vane is negative, beacause the positive charge that was in the vane traveled to disk leaving the vane charge negatively.

3) .- when a person touch the electroscope with a finger the negative charge that was in the vane go away finding the road to ground, the sign in the disk is positive because the rod has not been removed. the sign in the vane in neutral.

4).- By the explaining in the above step, the disk keeps a positive charge while the rod stays near. The vane has a neautral charge because the negative charge go away to ground by the finger of the person

5).- when the charge rod is removed the disk keeps a positive charge but much of this charge travels to the vane, being the electroscope charging positively.

I think, that the acrylic rod stay near of the part used to touch the disk shall have the negative charge and the opposite side shall have positve charge. this cause that the teflon rod and acrylic rod are removed the electroscope stays with neutral charge.
